Crown Football Round-Up
As the main focus over the past couple of weeks have been International fixtures, let's take a look at our clients who received a call up to represent their country!
Corey Whelan featured in two games for Ireland last week. A 96th minute goal from Shaun Donnellan gave Ireland a crucial win in their European U21 Championship Qualifying Round match in Tallaght Stadium against Azerbaijan. Corey was instrumental across the back four, helping the team keep a clean sheet and luckily they nicked a goal in the final moments of the game. The other game also finished in a great result for the Irish, 3-1 thanks to the Hale brothers, Rory and Ronan, who scored either side of Ryan Manning's first-half strike to make it a night to remember for the Derry City footballers.
England U21s warmed up for Tuesday's Euro 2019 qualifier against Ukraine with a hard-fought 2-1 friendly win over Romania at Molineux, with Alex Pascanu featuring at the back for Romania. Alex battled extremely well against the young Lions and showed his strength and discipline versus a strong English side.
With 11 goals scored in three games, the Young Lions qualified in style for the summer’s European U19 Championship. Adam Lewis made his England U19s debut in a 4-1 win victory over Hungary, which was shortly followed by a 3-0 win over Latvia. Congratulations to Adam, a great achievement for the young left back, who will now return to Liverpool and help the team push on with the U23s in the Premier League 2.
Connor Kirby performed well for Sheffield Wednesday U23s on Monday with a 2-1 win over Coventry. The result followed a 1-0 win away to Burnley on Friday, with a solid performance from Connor, contributing to the back to back wins for the Owls.
Christian Walton has kept up his amazing form. Unfortunately Wigan Athletic lost their FA Cup quarter final game against Southampton in a 2-0 defeat, however all the plaudits were talking about Christian after the game. The goalkeeper, currently on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion, showed his Premier League pedigree making two world class saves against Manolo Gabbiadini, including a shot from the penalty spot! Check out the footage below:
Since then, Wigan bounced back and have kept a further 2 clean sheets in League One, while on the road to Walsall and Bury, winning both 2-0 and 3-0 respectively!
Wigan have now kept the most league clean sheets since the 16/17 season compared to all other clubs in top 4 English tiers (including Play Offs):
